War can outrun rivals in feature
We are back at Saratoga on Wednesday and the feature $85,000 Dayatthespa Stakes (8.02) rates a pretty intriguing contest with the morning line prices indicating it is a match race between 7/5 favourite Classic Lady and 8/5 second-favourite War Canoe.
Having spent time analysing the contest, it looks more of a three-horse race with Vortex Road holding sound claims from the outside post despite the sharp grade rise, though I came down on Chad Brown’s War Canoe as the most likely winner.
This seven-year-old mare, who has drawn the perfect stall in gate one and gets the assistance of Javier Castellano, proved consistent in allowance optional claiming company last year and was pitched into black type races in the autumn, finishing second in the John Hettinger Stakes at Belmont before filling third in the Ticonderoga Stakes behind Fifty Five.
That stablemate got the better of War Canoe once again on her return to the track after an eight-month layoff at Belmont Park at the start of the month. In what was a slowly-run race for the grade, Fifty Five got the jump on her main rivals and led home Classic Lady, who beat War Canoe by a length and a quarter.
